Bateman saw the early potential in psychosurgery, investing in the preliminary stages, and converting family from mere multimillioaires to billiionaires. Bateman ended up being on the board of Cognite, and road out the Fall in perfect peace, high above in a sheltered L5 redoubt. Bateman had become somewhat bored with life, and his thrill-seeking, scandal-causing ways found him enemies within the company, who preferred that their fellow hypereilites stay out of the scandal casts. Although Bateman had no involvement with the Lost Generation, he was chosen as a fall guy, ousted from the board, and lost a good deal of his fortune. At this point, tiring of Mars, he decided to "retire" to a scum barge, living out a life of sex, drugs, and extreme sports. Despite being retired from the hypercorp life, he maintains a vast network of people who owe him favors, people he has blackmail material on, etc. Firewall contacted him initially because he was suspected of being involved in the Lost Generation. When it was discovered he was not, rather than just killing him and reviving a fork with no memory of the Firewall contact; the Firewall router instead kept him on-board, deciding that he would be a good social networker for a group of sentinals already aboard the scum swarm.
